Events at St John’s College become great not because they are grand or extravagant, but because they are meaningful. And when they are meaningful, they naturally grow – in fact, they evolve over time as they touch more lives and create endearing memories. For me, this is the essence of the Mothers’ Dinner here at St John’s.
Once again, demand for seats was exceptionally high this year, leading to the use of the entire Dining Hall, Vaughan Room and Sir Cyril Walsh KBE Law Library, with the Philosophical Room opened as a fourth dining space to accommodate the huge demand and enthusiasm for the event.
The highlight of the evening was the touching Mother-and-Daughter speech delivered jointly by Mrs Penny Babbage and her daughter, Senior Resident Assistant and third-year student Darcey Babbage. The speech was delivered in tandem, with the pair alternating their remarks, captivating all those present with warmth, humour, emotion, and sincerity. There were also many tears throughout the dining rooms.

Darcey reflected on the strength and guidance she has always gained from her mother, and her loving gratitude for all that her mother has gifted her in life:
“It is only natural, I think, for any mother to harbour quiet concerns about how her child might fare without the familiar comforts of home. Yet, one of the most unexpected blessings of St John’s was that it offered precisely that — a second home and a new family. In moments when life felt tough our John’s family stood beside me, to gently remind me of the many joys life has to offer.
Mum, your influence echoed — teaching me to seek kindness, to trust connection, and to recognise love even when it came from unfamiliar faces. St John’s did not replace home; rather, it became a beautiful extension of the love that first shaped me. And for that — quietly, always — I am grateful.
Mrs Penny Babbage addressed the mothers and students highlighting the many places where family can be found:
“Darcey came to St John’s not knowing anyone and has in her time developed wonderful friendships and has found a second home in this supportive community. What has been so striking is the care that is encouraged and taken up by all the students to look out and be there for each other.
How glad we have been for Darcey to transition to the next phase of life here with those whom she has found such support and a sense of belonging. Mums, like you will be of your children, I am incredibly proud of who Darcey is, wants and aspires to be. Her determination, resilience, pertinacity, care and kindness for others; and importantly, sense of agency, reminds me that our future is in good hands. Our children’s time spent at St John’s, we know to be formative and life-building, and I am thankful for her time here and the life-long community to which she now belongs.”
In my address, I went on to reflect deeply on the role and impact of mothers, celebrating their strength, influence, and enduring presence in the life of the College:
“The College has experienced exceptional successes this year — sporting victories in Rowing, Cricket, and Swimming, outstanding academic achievements, and choreography for our Dance Team that I personally believe was second to none. But who are the true architects of these victories? Well, that’s our mothers!
You are the architects of the future, raising children who will shape this world. And here at St John’s, you’re doing this while pursuing your own dreams, breaking barriers, and making us all proud. You inspire me, you inspire your children, and you inspire this entire community to be better.
We don’t know what the future may hold — 'que sera sera’ — but the best thing we can do is support our children in being as physically, mentally, and spiritually prepared to face whatever comes their way.
To every mother here tonight: you are seen, you are cherished, and you are extraordinary. A very Happy Mother’s Day to you all.”
After the speeches, each student honoured their mother with flowers— a simple yet loving gesture of gratitude and affection. The evening concluded with a heartfelt rendition of "Que Sera Sera", led by Richard Perrignon on piano, Mairead McCaughan and Matt Avery on vocals, with Liam Hill on trumpet, Tim Dickinson on violin, and David Kimpton on percussion. The musicians were joined by students and their mothers in the final verses, with a special verse written especially for the occasion.
