In another fantastic result for the College, our Rawson Rowing Team have taken first place for the second year in a row. Last year, the Rawson Rowing squad claimed the College’s first rowing victory in 69 years, with this year being the first time in our history that Rawson Rowing has been won in two consecutive years.
The St John’s Rawson Rowing crew opened the race strongly and led from the outset, maintaining their advantage throughout the course. They crossed the finish line victorious, winning by over a boat length in a thrilling display of teamwork and composure.

One aspect of our rowers – and indeed many of those who are students at St John’s College – is that they are all-rounders. Individuals who strive to achieve their best and stretch their abilities in all aspects of life, be it academic excellence, sporting pursuits, artistic and musical endeavours, or professional and vocational skills. In what is a testament to the strength of friendships formed here at St John’s, our students support each other every step of the way.

A special mention to Jack McDonald, who has now coxed the St John’s Rawson crew for three years. He has definitely solidified his place in the annals of St John’s College!
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our Rawson Rowing Secretaries, Charlie Baker and Jack Cullen, and our coach, Will Raven, for their exceptional dedication and commitment in guiding our crew to this historic achievement.
Later this year, the St John’s Rawson eight will represent the Colleges of the University of Sydney at the national colleges’ competition, which will be held in Sydney in 2026.
This achievement is a reflection of the spirit that defines life at St John’s. While the result on the water is a remarkable sporting accomplishment, the true significance lies in the commitment and shared purpose that brought the team together – which then strengthens their camaraderie.
From the earliest training sessions through to race day, our rowers demonstrated discipline, and resilience, and I could not be prouder of them.
Congratulations to all our rowers!
