Passing of the
new St John’s College Act.

The College Council had commissioned the writing of a ‘comprehensive history’ of the College from its incorporation in 1858 until the passing of the new St John’s College Act in 2018, but that this was not to be an ‘official history’. In 2021, Dr Peter Cunich was given the task of writing this book. Dr Cunich felt that his history of the College would be ‘a story of progress towards fulfilling the aspirations of the founders in 1858’.

Dr Cunich was successively Tutor in History and Senior Tutor at the College before leaving to pursue his doctorate in late-medieval history under the supervision of Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University in 1987. After three years as a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge in the early 1990s, he moved to the University of Hong Kong (HKU) where he had a long and distinguished career in the History Department, where his final research project was a history of the university. He retired from HKU in 2021 and now lives in England.
