Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the year is the annual College Mothers' Dinner. Demand for tickets was exceptionally high this year, leading to the Dining Hall and Vaughan Room being sold out on the day of ticket release. To accommodate the overflow, a second area was set up in the recently opened Sir Cyril Walsh KBE Law Library.
The evening commenced in the Quadrangle, illuminated by newly purchased festoon lighting that created a delightful ambiance in the cool autumn evening. Fortunately, the rain held off, allowing attendees to enjoy canapés, drinks and each other’s company in the outdoor space.
The main course and dessert were served in the Dining Hall, where third-year, second-year students, a select few first-year students and their mothers gathered. Other attendees were seated between the sumptuous Vaughan Room and newly-opened Law Library, each presided over by their own High Tables and connected to the Dining Hall via television monitors and speakers.
The Rector warmly welcomed all guests, noting that tickets were harder to secure than those of a Taylor Swift concert, and emphasised the celebration of the unique bond between mothers and children.
A highlight of the evening was the touching mother and daughter speech, delivered by Mrs Karen Garnsey and her daughter, co-House President Anna Garnsey.
Mrs Garnsey addressed the children of those mothers present, highlighting the sacrifices made by parents to provide opportunities and the importance of the values instilled by the College:
So, to our beautiful kids. I know you all know the sacrifices we your mothers and your fathers have made to ensure you have this experience and every opportunity it brings as you head out into the world. Reflect on the Catholic institution that provides such a wonderful opportunity and the values it embodies. There is a reason that John’s has been able to transition to such a successful version of the modern college.

I have realised that while I am now an independent young woman, I will never not depend on my mum. Mothers, your role may be different now, but that does not make it any less crucial. Because at this age, though we don’t need you to iron our clothes…, we do need you to give us confidence. Confidence that a change in degree or failed job interview is not the end of the world. Confidence that despite losing touch with friends from school or feeling isolated at times from the friends we do have, we are still a person of value who has the capacity to forge meaningful lifelong connections. And above all, the confidence that we are on the right track. A mother is forever the counter to any insecurities that might limit their child’s success in life.
The Rector further underscored the remarkable qualities of motherhood, praising mothers:
As a busy individual, often inundated with inquiries about how I manage to juggle my myriad of responsibilities, I'm always quick to credit the real masters of multitasking and time management – the mothers, acknowledging that mothers outshine all of us in this regard. But perhaps one of the most remarkable qualities of motherhood is its profound ability to inspire and protect. Mothers serve as our fiercest defenders, our unwavering support system, and our guiding light in times of darkness. They are our eyes and ears, our safety barometer, and the one constant presence in our lives, regardless of the challenges we may face. In a world filled with uncertainties, where we are bombarded with issues, headlines, and political turmoil, a mother's protection remains steadfast and unwavering.
Following the speeches, each student presented their mother with flowers as a gesture of love and appreciation. The evening concluded with a heartfelt rendition of "Edelweiss" led by Mary-Jean O'Doherty, with all joining in. The violin was played by final year medical student Jason Chami.

As is now tradition, mothers and their children continued the celebration at the College Bar (Dail) for post-dinner drinks.
