student life

The College of St John the Evangelist offers a traditional 'collegial' experience of University life. By taking up the offer to become a member of this College, each student indicates his or her intention to participate fully in the life of the College.

Presence at formal meals, worship, cultural, social and sports events are therefore very important. Students should be role models in the academic, ecclesial and wider communities and their general behaviour must accord with this. Behaviour and language which is violent, offensive or discriminatory, or irresponsible or illegal use of alcohol/drugs, will render a student's position in the College subject to review.

St. John's College is first of all, an academic community: the focus is on working with students to support and enrich their university studies.

The Rector and Staff provide pastoral care and guidance and, together with the College's Academic Tutors, programmes to supplement the teaching and tutoring on campus.

Computer facilities link St John's College to the University of Sydney. The Music room ensures oportunities for practice by students. Use of the College's piano and the Chapel Organ is encouraged.

Students live on campus, which makes it easy to come and go to lectures, to return briefly for lunch or an afternoon break. Walk out of the front gate and it's just a short bus ride or a 20 minute walk to the city.

St John's is always on the lookout for all-rounders who are ready to make the most of their undergraduate years. We encourage applications from interesting and enthusiastic students who display a diversity of life experiences and who are keen to participate in college life. Residents are selected on the basis of academic merit, personal and academic references and a personal interview.

There is a growing preference for students to live on campus and enjoy Collegiate life, so the small number of places we have to offer each year fill very quickly. It's a good idea to apply early and students are very welcome to make an appointment to visit with their families. A tour of the College can be arranged so that current students and staff can provide a better idea of life at St John's.

There are OPEN DAYS in January and August each year. Simply call the College to book your place for a tour.

The St. John's College Students' Club

The Students' Club is the body that looks after much of the day-to-day activity of the students of the College. Formed in 1891, the Students' Club is governed by its own constitution and is led by the House Committee, allowing valuable leadership opportunities to members of this team of students. The House Committee is elected by the students at the end of each academic year. The House Executive, comprising the President, Secretary and Treasurer, meets regularly with the Rector and Vice-Rector to discuss matters concerning the College. The Committee also meets to discuss and organise the Club's financial, cultural, sporting and social activities, which are inclusive, numerous and vibrant.
