the rector

Mr Michael Bongers comes to St John's from St Leo's College, within the University of Queensland, where he has been Vice-Rector of Students since 2004. Prior to St Leo's College he was Head of the Faculty of Mathematics at St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, Brisbane, from 1995 - 2003. Michael began his teaching career in Rockhampton and St Brendan's College Yeppoon, his alma mater. His main teaching areas are religious education and mathematics. In addition, Michael has coached A Grade schoolboy rugby and cricket.

Michael has a Diploma of Teaching (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (University of Central Queensland), Master of Education (Queensland University of Technology) and is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education through the Australian Catholic University.

Michael brings valuable experience in the promotion of Catholic values and leadership, university college administration, cultural change, pastoral care, community involvement and enhancement of academic performance.
