how do I apply?

UNIVERSITY LIVE
University Open Day is on Saturday 30 August
This is a good day to have a guided tour of the College, with your parents, and to have an interview with the Rector. Ring 02 9394 5219 to book.

Entry to St John's College is competitive, as applications exceed available places. Apply early to allow the best possible opportunity: applicants are encouraged to complete the application process, including the interview with the Rector, as early as possible in the year before entry, and preferably no later than 15 November. Though applications are considered on merit alone, and not on the order of receiving them, it should be borne in mind that we will post a first round of conditional offers in mid-November. A second round goes out in mid-January when University offers have been made. Clearly students applying after that date are very unlikely to be successful, due to the high demand for on-campus accommodation.

The College accepts students who enrol at any course offered by the University of Sydney. All applicants are formally interviewed in person by the Rector although other arrangements can be made for overseas or interstate students, if a face-to-face interview is impossible. Students intending to take a GAP year should ideally apply before doing so, in order to maximize their chances of being offered a place for the year after they return.

The primary selection criteria are:

  • A high UAI score (or equivalent final school results), or good results from previous years at University.

  • Referees' Reports, which must be provided directly to the College by referees who are not related to the applicant and are in a position to make an independent assessment.

In addition to the above, successful applicants will be students whose interests and achievements cover a wide range of the following:

  • A strong sense of purpose and a well-considered career goal

  • Commitment as a Church member

  • Employment experience (including a GAP year)

  • A strong record of Community Service and a stated commitment to the College's initiatives in helping others

  • Leadership or organizational experience, at school or elsewhere

  • Willingness to offer their sporting skills as members of College teams

  • Musical talent, choral or instrumental

  • A background in Drama, Debating, Public Speaking or any other cultural areas.

Most of the colleges of the University of Sydney have now formed an application consortium to make the application process easier, cheaper and more efficient for students.

A student wishing to be considered for residency at any college on the list must complete only one application form, listing their college choices in order of preference. The application must then be sent to the College of first choice only - in this case, St John's College, 8a Missenden Road, Camperdown NSW 2050 Australia.

A non-refundable application fee of $50 and four passport-sized photographs should be included with your application. Confidential references (on the form above) should be sent directly to the Rector by your referees. They should not be seen by the applicant.

On receipt of the application form, candidates will be contacted by the college and asked to arrange an interview with the Rector (or a senior member of staff).

Applicants should themselves advise the College immediately of their exam results, by email or fax. Although the College has access to official results, we prefer students to advise us directly. This also confirms their continuing interest in being considered for admission.

It is also the applicant's responsibility to inform the college immediately after being notified by the University of acceptance into a Faculty.

Room Allocations and Fees

It is customary for Fresher (first year) rooms to be allocated randomly. Sometimes it is necessary for us to allocate Freshers to twin-share accommodation, although this is normally only done at the request of the applicant. Sharing a room entails a considerable saving in cost. The St John's College fees for this academic year can be obtained from the Fees section on this website.
