St John's College
VISITING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
Academics, writers, artists and people of distinction from all walks of life are invited to apply for Visiting Fellowships at St John's College.
The Visiting Fellowship Programme makes available cost-free accommodation in a fully-furnished cottage in the College grounds to scholars and others who are specialists in their fields and who wish to have an opportunity for private work or research while being part of a collegiate community.
The terms of appointment are simple. The college provides free board and lodging, with dining rights, for the visitor and members of the visitor's family (if applicable, and subject to the cottage's size constraints). The Visiting Fellow is expected to attend the formal dinners (Mondays and Wednesdays) and to offer the College and its students an opportunity to develop or enrich themselves in his or her area of expertise. This may be done though seminars, lectures, discussion groups etc. Visiting Fellows are expected to acknowledge the College in any publication or exhibition arising from their time in residence. Beyond this, nothing is expected except that the visitor live among us as a friendly and approachable practitioner of his or her discipline.
It is possible to combine a Visiting Fellowship with research at the University of Sydney or with other relevant programmes.
The accommodation provided is a fully self-contained cottage (one bedroom, a living room/study (which can serve as a second bedroom) and a kitchen dining area. The cottage stands apart from the main College buildings and has its own garden. All meals are available in the Dining Hall if Visitors prefer not to prepare their own.
The college cannot assist with travel expenses, but may support and advise appointees in applying for grants for this purpose.
Applications are accepted for any period in term-time (approximately the beginning of March to the middle of November, but excluding the mid-year break which normally occupies most of July). The College will consider variations from these times, but it should be borne in mind that Visiting Fellows are expected to share in the active life of the College and its students. The minimum effective period is normally considered to be one month, the maximum one full semester. Applicants should send a CV and a brief summary of their intended project to the Rector at ddaintree@stjohns.usyd.edu.au
