Fees

Enrolment

It is the applicant's responsibility to inform the Rector immediately on being notified by the University of acceptance into a Faculty.

University Terms

Semester 1: Sunday 2 March, 2008 to Saturday 28 June, 2008
Semester 2: Sunday 27 July, 2008 to Saturday 22 November, 2008

Vacation Residence

Student fees are viewed as a total obligation and cover full board for the entire 37-week academic year, including the mid-year vacation. Students are not accepted by St John's College on a "weekly rental" basis.

Orientation Week

All students coming into residence for the first time are required to attend Orientation week. This commences on Tuesday 26 February 2008 and a charge of $280.00 incl. GST will apply.

Fees for Residents for 2008

Enrolment Fee:

Charged on first account only for new students: $495.00 incl. GST

Residence Fee:

The College offers 2 levels of accommodation; namely single and twin share. The fees include all meals seven days a week.

The single room fee for the year 2008 averages out at $395.00 per week (incl. GST). The fee for twin share averages out at $300.00 per person per week (incl. GST).

Security Deposit:

A deposit of $500.00 is required prior to the commencement of residence at the college to confirm your place and as a surety against any possible charges that may be incurred during residence. This will be refunded at the end of the year less any deductions. This amount is not refunded if the student withdraws from College for any reason before the end of the academic year.

Commitment Deposit:

A Semester II Commitment Deposit of $500.00 is required at the same time as the Security Deposit. This represents a down payment which will be credited against your Semester II invoice. This amount is not refunded if you withdraw from College for any reason before the end of the academic year.

Parking:

Once approval has been granted to park a vehicle on the College grounds a charge of $55.00 inc GST will be charged per Semester per vehicle.

Maintenance Levy:

A levy of $100.00 per semester will be added to all both semester invoices. This levy is not compulsory and may be treated as a tax-deductible donation. Should you wish to contribute in this way a separate receipt will be issued for tax purposes.

Student Club Fee:

$175.00 per semester. This amount is passed on to the Student Club for the benefit of students of St John's.

Single Semester:

Occasionally, and only by prior agreement, students (usually 'study abroad' students from overseas) are admitted for one semester only. In these cases there is a surcharge of approximately 10% on the weekly rate.

Payment of Accounts

Accounts are rendered before the beginning of each semester, and are to be paid to the College at the commencement of the semester. Payments by instalments can be arranged with the Business Manager. Students having difficulties meeting the cost of their fees should see the Rector immediately.

No refund of fees is offered throughout the year, except in very exceptional circumstances, and only at the discretion of the College Council.

Unless other arrangements have been made, students are accepted into College on the understanding that they will remain in residence for the full academic year.

Membership of the College is conditional upon an undertaking by the student to accept the authority of the Rector (and those to whom his authority is delegated) in all matters related to the government of the College and the conduct of student affairs. An application for admission will be taken to imply assent to this.

Comparative Cost of Living 2008 (Fresher)

Colleges have a reputation for being expensive, but this is undeserved. The hidden costs of living in self-catering accommodation are usually not appreciated. The following table sets out a comparison based on the current College fee and a weekly rental of $190.

Comparisons of this kind are very difficult due to variations in circumstances. The Furniture and Removals estimate for rental accommodation may be thought excessive. On the other hand the estimates for renting are based on 38 weeks only, though many tenants are expected to sign a contract for 52 weeks. On balance, however, we believe there is an approximate parity.
