cultural
St.
John's caters for many different
cultural interests and activities in which all students are encouraged
to participate.
Debating
The
College takes part in the
Intercollegiate Debating Cup every year, competing with the other
Colleges of the University of Sydney. Competition is of a high standard
with many college teams consisting of University debaters. St. John's
last won the cup in 1997 and came a close 3rd in 1999 and 2000. During
first semester, a fresher debate is held against our sister college,
Sancta Sophia. These are much less serious than Intercol debates and
aim to provide more fun than cultural enlightenment.
Theatre
"The
Missenden Players" is a theatrical
group comprising St. John's and Sancta Sophia Collegians. A play is
staged every year during second semester showcasing both Colleges'
talent. Students are involved in all aspects of production.
Oration
The
Intercol Oration is held once a year
with all Colleges taking part. An internal competition is held to
choose St. John's representative. The official competition is attended
by The Chancellor and other distinguished members of the University.
Music
The
College Choir sings Mass at Chapel
regularly and performs other kinds of music as
well.
Concerts to showcase the musical talents of our students are presented
each year. The College enjoys a close relationship with Capella
Sublima, a distinguished a
capella vocal consort directed by Mr
Richard Perrignon.
