making a bequest to st john's

By including The Rector and Fellows of St John's College in your Will, you are creating an enduring testament to the ongoing legacy of the College Founders who, in 1857, felt compelled to create a Catholic college within the University of Sydney.

By making a bequest to St John's, you will create an enduring link with St John's - YOUR Alma Mater, and you will honour the generosity of the past. Thousands of University of Sydney students have enjoyed the St John's experience and they are vital evidence of the benevolence of past generations.

We urge you to consider this option for the benefit of future students at St John's, just as generations of benefactors before you.

Outstanding in the philanthropic history of St John's are individuals such as Countess Freehill, who generously provided the funds for the building of the Freehill Tower in 1930. Many other individuals and families since have assisted in this way, contributing to the development of buildings that have made St John's home away from home for so many students from around the country and around the globe for 150 years, just as it is today.

Some suggested wording for a Bequest to the Rector and Fellows of St John's can be found in the St John's College Bequest Intention document. This may assist you in the preparation of your Will, but we recommend that you seek legal advice before preparing such a document. Discussion with family members, where appropriate, at the time of making your Will is invariably beneficial to all parties. Benefactors may be in a position to bequeath all, or part, or the residual of their Estate to the benefit of The Rector and Fellows of St John's College and by providing this document as a guideline, we hope that we will remove the apprehension out of the process of making a Bequest for the benefit of St John's.

There are many solicitors associated with the College who would be happy to assist you. Should you wish to advise the College of your intentions, we assure you that your private information will be held in the utmost confidence unless you wish to divulge it publicly as an example for others to follow.

The joy of divulging this information during your lifetime would also give us the opportunity to thank you more appropriately for your generosity.

Your Generous Bequest will help us to:

  • Maintain a constant level of excellence in the College buildings and upgrade residential facilities for the benefit of students of the future
  • Meet the cost of upkeep and maintenance of College facilities and protect historical features
  • Keep abreast of technology demands and advancement of intranet and computer facilities for the sake of our resident students and administration
  • Implement and maintain a strong Community Service Outreach program for students, with a view to caring for others less fortunate in the wider community
  • Maintain our Catholic presence in the secular University environment

The Rector and Fellows of St John's College believe that a carefully prepared Will generally saves confusion, division and conflict over the administration of a person's Estate.
