St John’s College at the University of Sydney has welcomed a bill introduced to the NSW Legislative Assembly earlier today to update and reform its governance. NSW Minister for Education, Hon. Rob Stokes, MP today tabled legislation to replace the 1857 Act with a new Act, which gives effect to the reforms which the College Council has sought since 2014.

The Chair of the St John’s Council, Dr Bernadette Tobin AO, said “The bill sets up a governing council properly structured for fulfilling the task of leading a university residential college in the twenty-first century. The College is grateful to the Government for implementing the College Council’s proposals and looks forward to the passage of the legislation in the New Year.”

It is understood that the St John’s College Bill 2017 will be enacted when Parliament resumes in February.
